Best time to travel

December - March, July - October

Kenya's equatorial location ensures warm weather year round, though it can be cool at night and first thing in the morning. There are two rain seasons, the long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December. The rainfall is sometimes heavy and when it does come it often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is from February to March and coldest in July to August.

Kenya; 9 Nights

Highlights

  • A highly personalised safari experience
  • Visit the home/gallery of a local Nairobi artist
  • Chyulu Hills - the youngest range of volcanic hills in Africa
  • Meet Maasai villagers

Day 1 - Arrive Nairobi
A personal welcome by A&K to the safari capital of Kenya. This evening, visit the home/gallery of a local Nairobi artist to view their works over a glass of wine. Continue to the Talisman restaurant for dinner, a popular local haunt (D).
House of Waine (Standard Room)

Day 2 - Nairobi - Chyulu Hills National Park
This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight south-east to Chyulu Hills National Park. Chyulu is the youngest range of volcanic hills in Africa. Your lodge is situated halfway between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks on a concession of 270,000 acres of communally-owned Maasai land, known as Mbirikani Group Ranch, which is also part of the Amboseli eco-system. Your luxury cottage for the next three nights has a rooftop 'star-bed' and a private plunge-pool. With views over the waterhole, you can even view game from the luxury of your own room (B,L,D).
Ol Donyo Lodge (Pool Cottage)

Day 3-4 - Chyulu Hills National Park
Over the next two days, you can choose from a wide range of guided activities. Over 7,000 wild animals find their habitat in and around the Ol Donyo Lodge environs. Not only the 'Big Five', but also cheetah, fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, giraffe and many other species share this diverse landscape. Guests are able to track wildlife by vehicle, on foot or horseback, and night drives are featured for those interested in spotting the more elusive nocturnal species. The real exclusivity of Ol Donyo Lodge is apparent when out exploring the land. The entire area is reserved for Ol Donyo Lodge guests - you'll see no other visitors, no fleets of mini-buses. It's private, pure and wild, and each day is different: there is no set routine (B,L,D).
Ol Donyo Lodge (Pool Cottage)

Day 5 - Chyulu - Samburu
This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight north via Nairobi to the Samburu National Reserve. Sasaab Camp is one of the most stylish and luxurious game lodges in Northern Kenya. Overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu Land, the lodge is comprised of nine detached rooms with huge thatched rooves and canvas sides, and sensational views down the river, over the bush and beyond. This afternoon, enjoy a game-drive through the park (B,L,D).
Sasaab Camp (Standard Room)

Days 6 - Samburu
Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves are a short drive from the lodge. Elephants are the highlight of a game drive in these reserves. The Samburu elephants are generally comfortable with the presence of vehicles, and you may well have a close encounter here with the world's largest land mammal. The reserves are also a great place to see the Samburu Special Five - Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. Lions, leopard and cheetah can also be observed. To fully appreciate these reserves, it's best to spend an extended period of time here, either setting out early with a picnic breakfast, or later with a picnic lunch. This is also a great place for night drives, departing after an early dinner and looking out for genet, White-tailed mongoose, porcupine, bushbabies and other nocturnal species (B,L,D).
Sasaab Camp (Standard Room)

Day 7 - Samburu - Masai Mara
Today you will fly south to the endless plains of the famous Masai Mara. The wide open spaces lend themselves to game viewing, which is why this reserve is one of the most well-regarded for wildlife in all of Africa. This afternoon, take a game drive in a specially-adapted 4WD vehicle. Prepare to be amazed. This evening, relax on your veranda with its unique view of the Mara River and watch the many wild animals that come down to drink (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Olonana (Tented Pavilion)

Days 8 - 9 - Masai Mara
The Masai Mara is a photographer's dream, with lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and the graceful Maasai giraffe all resident. Spend the next two days on safari with morning and afternoon game viewing activities. The vast rolling hills of the Masai Mara make spotting game a little easier. Whilst staying at Sanctuary Olonana you are invited to participate in the AKP Tree Planting Project. By planting an indigenous tree you are personally assisting in the reforestation of the Masai Mara (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Olonana (Tented Pavilion)

Day 10 - Masai Mara - Nairobi
This morning, depart the Masai Mara and fly back to Nairobi where you say Kwaheri (good-bye) to Kenya (B).

& Moment
Many very gifted artists live and work in the attractive Nairobi suburb of Karen. Painters, sculptors and jewellery designers take inspiration from Kenya's beautiful wildlife and cultural riches to create fabulous art. Meet an artist in their home/gallery, and view their works over a glass of wine followed by dinner at Talisman restaurant, a favourite amongst the locals.
