Day 01 Muscat - Salalah

Depart Muscat on your evening flight to Salalah, Oman’s southernmost city and capital of the Dhofar region. Salalah exhibits a subtle African flavor not found elsewhere in Oman. The surrounding countryside is seasonally very lush and green, thanks to an annual summer monsoon, called the Khareef, which cloaks the coastal mountains with rain bearing fog.

Day 02 Salalah

After breakfast, enjoy a morning at leisure, relaxing in the hotel.

In the afternoon, your tour begins by driving into the Qara mountains west of Salalah, to visit Jobs’ Tomb (the Biblical Job is also an Islamic prophet) and enjoy a unique panoramic view over the Al Garbib plain and Salalah. Your route back to Salalah passes groves of frankincense trees as the aroma of the ancient incense follows you back to the city. Visit the open-air souq, an excellent place to purchase the frankincense brought down from the nearby mountains and sold by Omani women in traditional dress.  Here trade in the precious incense proceeds much like it did centuries ago (B).

Day 03 Salalah - Muscat

Your tour of Salalah continues with a visit to the Al Balid museum on the outskirts of the city, illustrating Salalah’s rich history. Archaeological excavations in the Al Balid area have revealed rock inscriptions, pre-Islamic coins and early Chinese pottery. Leaving the city, visit the picturesque fishing town of Taqah, with a beautiful sand beach and restored 19th century fort. Taqah, like the other southern coastal towns, bears witnesses to Oman’s glorious seafaring past. Continuing eastward, visit Khor Ruri (Samhuram) a major port for the ancient frankincense trade and the site of one of the palaces of the legendary Queen of Sheba. The ancient city of Khor Ruri area dates from between the fourth century BC and the fifth century AD and is recognized as the most significant settlement from the area’s pre-Islamic period. Continue on to Wadi Darbat, where, in the drier seasons, you will travel up the wadi for several kilometres to where small streams cascade down the mountain face. Return to your hotel and your afternoon flight to Muscat (B).
