Day 01 Muscat – Khasab
This morning fly from Muscat to Khasab, on the beautiful Musandam Peninsula. Jutting out into the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, the Musandam lies at the most northern tip of the Sultanate, separated from the rest of Oman by a thin strip of land belonging to the United Arab Emirates. The Musandam is defined by rugged coastal mountains cut by the dark waters of the deep water fjords that earn the peninsula its nickname of the “Norway of the Middle East”. On arrival enjoy a tour of Khasab, including the market area where an active trade goes on with Iranian merchants, and Khasab Fort, built by the Portuguese in 16th century. In the afternoon you will enjoy a pleasant dhow cruise to Telegraph Island. Sailing past the tiny fishing hamlets, your dhow will almost certainly be joined by families of dolphins playing in the bow-wake. Over 20 of the world’s species of dolphin are found here in large numbers. Along with other abundant sea life, including whale sharks and manta rays, the Musandam is also a bird watcher’s paradise, and you may sight cormorants, masked boobies and steppe eagles.
