Day 1 Arrive Buenos Aires

Arrive into the ‘Paris of the Americas’ to a private A&K welcome. Settle into your boutique hotel in the Recoleta district.

Day 2 Buenos Aires

Half day private sightseeing tour visit to the Port district of La Boca and the Bohemian delights of San Telmo where you visit the beautifully resroted 19th Century residence of El Zanjon.  A seductive treat in store tonight with dinner and a tango show at Phillipe Starck’s Faena Hotel & Universe’s Rojo Tango (B, D)

Day 3 Buenos Aires - Salta

Transfer to the airport for the flight* to Salta in the north-west where an orientation tour introduces you to this fine colonial city. Visit the Cathedral, MAAM Museum (Museum of High Altitude Archaeology and the council buildings. Visit San Francisco Church and its beautiful belfry that, at 57m, was for many years the highest tower in South America. There is a photo stop at San Bernardo Convent and Church to appreciate the Wooden Carved Door. Take the funicular up San Bernardo Hill for fantastic panoramic views and return by car along San Martin Street visiting San Martin Park and Güemes Monument (B).

Day 4 Salta - Cachi (2,280m)

Depart Salta for the drive to Cachi, a beautiful town in the Calchaquí Valley of Salta on the east slope of Nevado Hill.  Cachi is a beautiful colonial town with charming white buildings, adobe houses, paved streets and impressive architecture (B).

Day 5 Cachi - Molinos

This morning continue along Ruta 40 to Molinos. Visit Seclantas en route, famous for its poncho making and 19th century church. Molinos was founded in 1659 and has a beautiful church dating to the 18th century with twin-domed bell-towers. It contains the mummified body of the last Royalist governor of Salta. This afternoon visit Bodega Colome and the Museo de Luz y Espacio (Museum of Light & Space). It is dedicated to the works of American artist James Turrel, whose art focuses on the optical phenomena of light. Turrel was charged with designing the interior gallery spaces which house his installations (B).

Day 6 Molinos - Cafayate

Continue south towards Cafayate. One of the highlights along Ruta 40 is Quebrada de las Flechas (Arrow’s Gorge) just south of Angastaco. Formed by the Rio Calchaqui and remarkable for its rock formations and colours, the gorge is named after the arrow-shaped rocks found in the area. In Angastaco visit the small archaeological museum (B).

Day 7 Cafayate

A chance to explore the area round Cafayate, well known for the production of the torrontes wine variety. Walk around the main square to visit the church and the town.

Later on visit the ruins of Quilmes, a fortified citadel of the Quilmes Indians. Its strategic situation and the width of its walls made it largely impregnable. Southeast of the main ruins are others which stretch several kilometres in the distance with splendid views and dramatic cacti. Time to wander around the ruins and see the remains of this 17th century city. Enjoy an aperitif at the Parador Ruinas de Quilmes (B).

Day 8 Cafayate - Salta - Buenos Aires

Return north to Salta. See the magnificent Quebrada de las Conchas (Conchas Gorge) one of the most important attractions in the province. The colourful landscape and interesting geological formations along this road are a highlight of the trip. Other points of interest are Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throad), Anfiteatro and the colonial architecture of Coronel Moldes.

Arrive at Salta Airport for the return flight* to Buenos Aires. Transfer to your boutique hotel in the fashionable Palermo district (B).

A full day in the Argentine capital with a vehicle and guide at your disposal (B).
