DAY 1 Port Moresby - Mt Hagen

A private A&K welcome and transfer for your onward flight* to Mount Hagen. An A&K representative will also assist you to your luxury lodge, located 7100ft above sea level on the outer fringes of the Kubor Range in the western highlands (D).
Rondon Ridge

DAY 2 Mt Hagen

Enjoy a full day’s touring around the capital of the Western Highlands Province, and discover the unique culture and traditions of the local Melpa people, who live a traditional subsistence lifestyle in the face of modernity. Until the 1930s, when Europeans first arrived in the highlands, the indigenous Melpa had no contact with the world beyond their mountain valleys and plains (B,L,D).
Rondon Ridge

DAY 3 Mt Hagen - Karawari

Today, fly via Kagamuga Airport to Karawari, where an A&K representative will assist with your transfer by riverboat to stunning Karawari Lodge. Standing majestically on a lone ridge 300 meters above the banks of the Karawari River, the lodge overlooks an endless expanse of dense tropical lowland rainforest in the East Sepik Province. Guests are accommodated in ten separate cottages, each built of local bush materials and inspired by traditional architecture. After lunch, visit Kundiman Village to watch traditionally-clad villagers demonstrate their customary method of making sago flour, the staple food of the local Sepik river people (B,L,D).
Karawari Lodge

DAY 4 Karawari

Spend an unforgettable day travelling along the remote jungle-fringed waterways of the Karawari River and its tributaries, where local boatmen expertly pole their slender dugout canoes. The island of New Guinea is home to some of the richest and most varied avifauna in the world, and 229 species have been recorded in the Karawari region. Explore life in the surrounding villages where you will visit traditional homes, witness ceremonial dances and celebrations, and may have the chance to buy local handcraft and carvings (B,L,D).
Karawari Lodge

DAY 5 Karawari - Ambua

Today, depart Karawari Lodge for your charter flight to the southern highlands, where an A&K representative transfers you to Ambua Lodge. Nestled amongst the Doma Peaks near Tari, almost 7000ft above sea level, this award-winning, eco-friendly lodge boasts magnificent views of the Tari Valley below and is a world-renowned birding destination. From the Lodge, well-kept nature trails venture out into the surrounding wilderness, crossing traditional vine bridges and tracing clear mountain streams to secluded waterfalls. Spend the afternoon on a guided walk through the dense forest searching for some of the many species of the exotic Bird of Paradise. There are 43 known species of Bird of Paradise, and 38 of these are found in Papua New Guinea. Most display striking colours and vivid plumage which distinguish them as some of the world's most dramatic and attractive birds (B,L,D).
Ambua Lodge

DAY 6 Ambua

In contrast to the Karawari and Sepik people whose art is manifested in ceremonial and decorative carvings, the Huli highland people’s art is revealed in body decoration and face painting with vivid yellow and red ochre. Elaborate headdresses of human hair decorated with brilliant Bird of Paradise feathers, pigments and flowers are worn by the famed Huli Wig-Men. Experience the Huli culture with village tours and local performances, the most vibrant and colourful in PNG (B,L,D).
Ambua Lodge

DAY 7 Ambua - Madang

Transfer to Tari Airstrip for your flight* to Port Moresby, with assistance to your onward flight* to Madang. The afternoon is at leisure. Madang Resort & Kalibobo Village, ideally-situated at the entrance to beautiful Madang Harbour, has absolute water frontage onto Dallman Passage and is surrounded by 25 acres of lush tropical landscaped gardens featuring dazzling displays of rare native orchids and many other extraordinary tropical plants. Originally operating as a guest house during the days of German colonial rule, the resort provides the perfect setting for relaxing or exploring (B,L,D).
Madang Resort

DAY 8 Madang

This morning, embark on a half-day cruise on Madang Harbour and enjoy a snorkelling tour amongst its many coral islands. Later, a guided private visit to BilBil village will introduce you to the colourful New Guinea cultural ritual of the 'sing-sing' (B,L,D).
Madang Resort

DAY 9 Madang - Port Moresby

Mt. Hagen Cultural Show

If you think Mardi Gras is flamboyant and colourful, wait till you see the Mt. Hagen Cultural Show in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea! Beneath an intense tropical sun and surrounded by jungle-clad mountains, over 50 tribal groups dressed in distinctly different traditional costume come together to perform their respective songs and dances in front of a roaring audience numbering over 50,000. The annual event, which takes place in mid-August, is one of the biggest on the PNG cultural calendar.
