Best time to travel

The best time to travel to Tanzania is between December and March and July and October.

Due to Tanzania's proximity to the equator the climate is generally warm year round ranging between 25°C to 32°C, there are however regional variations. With two rain seasons, the 'short rains' fall between November and December whilst the 'long rains' between February and into early May.

Tanzania; 7 Nights

Highlights

  • Explore three of Tanzania's great game parks
  • Visit the AKP project, the Gijedabung Primary School

Day 1 - Arrive Arusha/Kilimanjaro
Jambo to Tanzania. A&K meet and greet and private transfer to your lodge located on the country's largest coffee plantation (D).
Arusha Coffee Lodge (Standard Room)

Day 2 - Arusha - Tarangire
This morning travel by 4WD LandCruiser southwest to Tarangire National Park which has one of the largest populations of elephants in Tanzania. Its sparse vegetation, broken up by baobab and acacia trees, makes it a beautiful and special location. Before the rains, droves of gazelle, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe migrate to the park's scrubland where the last grazing remains. At Swala you have the opportunity to either go on a walking safari or head out on a night game drive: as dusk falls, relax in the comfort of your safari vehicle as you venture into the park transformed by night and search for nocturnal animals rarely seen by visitors (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Swala (Bush Pavilion)

Day 3 - Tarangire National Park
Today is a full day on safari with morning and afternoon game drives by 4WD LandCruiser. This park is famous for its large herds of elephants, with viewing at its best from July to October when the elephants migrate through the park in search of water. Breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe and the mountains to the south make a stop at Tarangire a memorable experience. A full day allows time for plenty of game viewing and, for those visiting during school term, a visit to the AKP project, Gijedabung Primary School (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Swala (Bush Pavilion)

Day 4 - Tarangire National Park - Ngorongoro Crater
Today travel to Ngorongoro Conservation area, stopping for lunch at Gibb's Farm, a working coffee plantation in the highlands, with time to stretch your legs on a forest walk. A short drive takes you to your lodge adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation area and within a 1500 acre estate (B,L,D).
The Manor at Ngorongoro (Standard Room)

Day 5 - Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into this vast extinct volcano whose towering walls are a natural enclosure for a dazzling abundance of wildlife. See wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and gazelle on the plains, waterbuck, bushbuck and eland in the forest, a healthy elephant population, black rhino, lion, leopard, hippo and flamingo. A picnic lunch is included during your day in the crater (B,L,D).
The Manor at Ngorongoro (Standard Room)

Day 6 - Ngorongoro - Olduvai Gorge - Serengeti National Park
Continue further north-west to the Serengeti National Park stopping en route at Olduvai Gorge, commonly referred to as the 'Cradle of Mankind'. It was here in 1959 that Mary and Louis Leakey uncovered a 1.8 million year old hominid skull. Descend with your guide into the gorge to observe the dig sites and witness current works. From the gorge drive to the shifting sands, a mound of black volcanic ash that has been pushed by the prevailing winds. Your game adventure resumes as you leave behind the volcanic plains and drive into the vast wilderness of the world famous Serengeti National Park (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Kusini (Terrace Tent)

Day 7 - Serengeti National Park
A full day in the Serengeti with morning and afternoon or full day game drives by 4WD vehicle. With an expert safari guide, explore the south central plains and many kopjes (rocky outcrops) in search of predators and other plains game. The Serengeti plays host to a wonderful spectacle each year - the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra who follow the rains in their continual search for grass and water (seasonal)- an unforgettable experience for even the most seasoned African traveller! (B,L,D).
Sanctuary Kusini (Terrace Tent)

Day 8 - Serengeti - Arusha/Kilimanjaro
A flight returns you to Arusha or Kilimanjaro where your Tanzanian safari ends (B,L).

Seasons in the Serengeti
Game viewing in the Serengeti varies according to season. Our Travel Specialists can help you determine the best location for the month of your travel.

December to March: Sanctuary Kusini in the Southern Serengeti is best. Every year wildebeest and zebra congregate on the camps doorstep during the calving season, bringing along with them the predators.

Mid May to Mid July: Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp and Singita Grumeti Reserves are recommended as every year in June and July, Africa's annual Great Migration passes through Grumeti, and hundreds upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores bravely cross the Grumeti River, risking an encounter with the jaws of some of Africa's largest crocodiles.

Mid July to October: Serengeti Migration Camp is recommended as the Wildebeest Migration passes through its vast plains.

A&K Philanthropy
Guests of Sanctuary Swala in Tarangire National Park are invited to visit the AKP sponsored project, Gijedabung Primary School. As part of its commitment to the local community the staff and management team at Sanctuary Swala have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that has led to the building of a school for the children of a village that borders the park. This provides a privileged opportunity for visitors to learn more about the project and become involved as part of their stay. Visits are possible Monday to Friday during school terms. Most of the students, with a fervent desire to learn, walk several kilometres a day, many of them barefoot, for the opportunity of a basic education.

Sanctuary Kusini Camp

Sanctuary Kusini is the only permanent tented camp in the southern Serengeti and provides extraordinary views of the plains below. Set on a rocky outcrop, or kopje, the 12 tented bush camp is so remote that it needs its own airstrip. Every year wildebeest congregate on the camp's "doorstep" in this unspoilt and remote part of the Serengeti during the calving season. The site for Sanctuary Kusini was decided upon only after a great deal of research and input from Sanctuary's guides and local experts. The camp itself is built on a raised kopje surrounded by woodland - providing stunning views of the plains below from the main deck. Zebra, Cape buffalo, lion and cheetah are a common sight year-round. The communal tent has a library, sitting room, dining room and veranda. Bush breakfasts and sundowners are served on the giant boulders of the kopje overlooking the endless plains for which the Serengeti is so famed. The 12 tents at Sanctuary Kusini are shaded from the sun by acacia trees, and all are positioned carefully with thought out views of the surrounding plains. Each tent has its own personal attendant to look after guests during their stay. The private wooden veranda with comfortable furniture is the ideal spot to relax for a sundowner after a hot restorative shower. Like all Sanctuary properties, Sanctuary Kusini is designed to have minimal environmental impact; in fact the camp can be packed up and removed without leaving a trace.

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp sits in a remote corner of the mighty Serengeti, right on the banks of a bywater of the Grumeti River. This world-renowned river is known for its wildebeest crossings and enormous Nile crocodiles. Every year in June and July, Africa's annual Great Migration passes through Grumeti, and hundreds upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores bravely cross the Grumeti River, risking an encounter with the jaws of some of Africa's largest crocodiles. Raised on platforms, the ten spacious safari tents overhung with banana-leaf and thatch roofs, decorated in vibrant cloth and African sculptures, have open-air showers and private verandas. At night listen to the sounds of Africa: the owls, bats and galagos (bushbabies) and the primeval calls of hyena, lion and leopard.

Singita Grumeti Reserves

Each of Singita's three Grumeti Reserve locations command a view of the renowned migratory route traversed annually by more than a million wildebeest, and the predators that lie in wait. The area is home to large herds of game that provide world-class photo opportunities all year round. Each of the lodges offer a unique experience: Singita Sasakwa Lodge positioned on Sasakwa Hill, presents dramatic, elevated views across the endless plains, Sabora Tented Camp celebrates flat open space as far as the eye can see and Faru Faru Lodge is tucked away in a diverse habitat.

Serengeti Migration Camp
Tucked away on the plains, the Serengeti Migration camp is located at the starting point of one of the world's great wonders - the Migration. The landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the ever changing climate and now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah grasslands with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Hidden among the rocky outcrops or kopjes of this vast landscape is a camp that exudes a decadence reminiscent of old Africa. The Serengeti is synonymous with low impact high action game viewing in a landscape untouched since the dawn of time. Richly furnished throughout, the camp provides a haven of sumptuous indulgence among the raw splendour of the surrounding bush. Its spacious tents have been carefully placed to provide privacy and blend into nature's architecture, overlooking the Grumeti River and its resident hippos. Surrounded by a 360 degree deck and with a 45 square metres floor space, each guest tent is a private sanctuary. The split level lounge, cigar bar, restaurant, sundecks and swimming pool are perched among the outcrops and overlook the vast and rugged landscapes that are home to the world's greatest mammal migration.
