Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort sits on a rocky outcrop in a former coconut plantation on the southern coast of Sri Lanka near the old fort town of Tangalle. The golden-hued beach is fringed by coconut palms and overlooks the rolling surf of the Indian Ocean.

Rooms are set in tropical garden surrounds with the beach beyond or overlooking the ocean with light, airy spaces and good use of Sri Lankan motifs and colonial style furnishings. All have balconies and some have plunge pools. Bathrooms are luxurious and stocked with signature Anantara amenities.

There’s an abundance of leisure choices here with award-winning Ayurvedic treatments available in the signature Anantara Spa, a 25-metre outdoor swimming pool, a yoga pavilion, meditation classes, badminton, tennis courts, Sri Lankan cooking lessons at the resort’s demonstration kitchen, wine tastings and local village visits.

There are six dining venues dotted around the resort, including all-day dining restaurant Journeys, where Sri Lankan, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Indian dishes are on offer and occasional themed evening events. Clifftop dining at Italian restaurant Il Mare is a winner and a perfect place for sundowners.

From April to September join volunteers on turtle watch at nearby Rekawa Beach where five species of turtle come to lay their eggs. Join Tropicsurf’s programme for local surf adventures and stand up paddleboarding or be part of the sunrise yoga by the sea.
