Legends, landscapes and limitless luxury in New Zealand

Where the wild things are

New Zealand offers up nature in its rawest state. Awaken with the dawn chorus – a cacophony of native birdsong – and look out across bushland, hobbit hills, jagged alps and thunderous glacial rivers. Feel the mist on your skin as it rises from an ancient rainforest. Witness geothermal energy bubbling from mineral-rich waters. Hike up a volcano’s ridge and be rewarded with emerald lakes and breathtaking vistas.

Both North and South Islands allow you to soak up the atmosphere at a leisurely pace or get stuck into more active pursuits. Lace up your hiking boots and head out on a great adventure,  just like Tolkien’s furry-footed friends. Alternatively, get a fresh perspective as you fly over mountain tops and deep gorges in a helicopter. Whichever way you choose to explore, the landscape will leave you spellbound.

Māori myths and legends

Māori culture is an integral part of Kiwi life and no trip to New Zealand would be complete without encountering it for yourself. From spine-tingling war dances – the Haka – to welcome ceremonies, traditional art, language and dance. Visit a marae – the tribal meeting grounds – to experience Māori customs and a mouthwatering hangi feast.

Take your taste buds on tour

Discover the exquisite food and wine of New Zealand. Each wine region has a unique offering and flavour profiles that differ from everywhere else on earth. Perhaps it’s the rich volcanic soil or maybe just the ingenuity of the Kiwi people. Enjoy a chauffeur-driven guided tour of New Zealand's best cellar doors. Devour Bluff oysters and greenshell mussels along rugged coastlines. And with New Zealand’s booming dairy industry, sample the abundance of artisan cheeses.

Best time to visit New Zealand

It is possible to explore New Zealand all year round. The climate is mild and varies across the islands. It can change unexpectedly from glorious sunshine to heavy rainfall, so be prepared for any season.

New Zealand’s balmy summer days run from December to February. Temperatures range from 21 to 25˚C with long sunshine hours. It’s the perfect time to kick off your shoes and enjoy sun, sea and sand. Sink your toes into sparkling black sand beaches and cool off among crashing waves. Picnic by turquoise lakes surrounded by purple lupins and mountain peaks. Relax as you set sail to secluded coves or take things to new heights with a heli-hike on Franz Josef Glacier.

Experience New Zealand during autumn’s amber transformation. Discover burnt orange beauty from March to May. Expect long sunny days with temperatures of 18 to 25˚C. The busy crowds of summer have left, making it possible to find tranquillity in magical landscapes. Autumn is a great time to explore the outdoors. Hike the trails on one of New Zealand’s Great Walks through national parks, native forest, crystal clear bays and soaring mountain peaks.

Hit the slopes in winter when mountains are blanketed in thick lashings of snow. Crisp cool days range between 10 and 16˚C from June to August but much cooler in the inland alpine areas. The North Island can feel cold but frost and snowfall are more common in the south. Some of the Great Walk tracks are closed at this time and vehicles require snow chains; A&K will be prepared for this if you wish to experience New Zealand’s world-class ski season. After a long day exploring a wintry wonderland, plunge into one of New Zealand’s natural hot pools or treat yourself to an indulgent spa experience.

Springtime blooms from September to November. Temperatures range from 16 to 19˚C depending on which island you’re exploring. Spot baby animals and wildflowers as you traverse the scenery on the way to iconic gems like Milford Sound. It’s waterfall season in spring so you’ll experience thunderous cascades as winter’s snow begins to thaw.
