A charming destination packed with natural, historical and cultural appeal
Bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, the charming Central American country of Guatemala is small and compact and easily visited in under two weeks. The destination is a stunning blend of ancient Maya traditions, Spanish colonial cities, highland villages and vibrant Caribbean towns. Its topography and ecosystems are diverse with active volcanoes, virgin rainforest, remote cloud forest and highland lakes home to an incredible array of birds and wildlife. But what makes the place truly unique are its people who are warm and welcoming with strong ethnic traditions which continue to thrive today. A visit there will reveal extraordinary Mayan archaeological sites like world-famous Tikal or the more secluded sites of Yaxhá, Aguateca, and El Mirador, the Spanish colonial charm of Antigua, exceptional traditional crafts and textiles and a good choice of luxury accommodation from private villas and upscale resorts to boutique hotels and jungle eco-lodges.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
Guatemala has a pleasant climate which makes it a year-round destination. The dry season runs from November to April, but even in the wet season rains generally occur for no more than a couple of hours a day. The highlands enjoy beautiful warm days and cool nights, while the lowlands around Tikal are generally hot all year round, with humidity increasing from May onwards.
