Russia

Discover a fascinating history, mesmerising monuments, glittering St Petersburg, Moscow and the Kremlin, and the charming Volga River.

Russia and with A&K will not disappoint. Russia has always fascinated with its sense of intrigue: Moscow and its iconic Red Square; the Kremlin and its former links with the KGB and St Petersburg whose opulent palaces, fabulous art-filled galleries and ornate bridges make this the ‘Venice of the North’, a living museum. And then there’s the indulgent wealth of the former ruling Tsars whose collections of jewels and art are among the most important in the world. As an integral player in the international race into space, Russia now has its own space museum, the Cosmonautics Memorial Museum.

Explore Moscow’s Red Square with the iconic spires of St Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Tomb. Ride the Moscow metro to see its ornately decorated stations. Visit the Kremlin including the Armoury Museum and the Russian Crown Jewels. Take a private tour of St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum with the curator. Travel cross-country through eight time zones on the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Vladivostok. Perhaps take a guided tour of Moscow’s space museum with an astronaut.

When to Go

February: Maslenitsa, a Mardi Gras-like European celebration in Moscow. April/May: St Petersburg Music Spring Festival of classical music. May-July: White Nights Festival, several months-long festival (when the sun barely sets) of music, opera, ballet and the amazing Scarlet Sails including fireworks in St Petersburg. November: Russia Revolution Day with huge parades and mass displays of gymnastics in Moscow. Weatherwise: May to October is the best time to enjoy pleasant summer days. Russian winters can be extremely cold, but, rugged up, also very romantic.
