Laos

Still relatively unexplored, the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’ retains a sleepy charm with World Heritage sites, a rich Buddhist culture and a growing selection of luxury hotels.

Gentle and enigmatic, land-locked Laos is bursting with breathtaking natural beauty, rich colonial influences, wondrous monuments and ethnic colour.

From the forest-clad mountains of the north to the islands in the far south, there are bewitching experiences at every turn. Discover its modest capital, Vientiane, on the banks of the Mekong where cosmopolitan restaurants and cafés complement charming French–Indochinese shopfronts. To the north, World Heritage listed Luang Prabang, also on the Mekong River, is a delight. This former capital is overflowing with gilded temples, processions of monks, colourful markets and artisan made handicrafts while outlying villages provide a snapshot of the country’s ethnic diversity.

In the country’s southwest, Champasak and the Bolaven Plateau sit high above the Mekong Valley amidst coffee and tea plantations. The ancient Khmer religious complex, Wat Phou, is the most important of the area’s spiritual centres and not to be missed.

Whether it’s a private boat tour of the stunning 4000 Islands, an afternoon sampling traditional Laotian fare in the comfort of a local home or an authentic Baci welcome ceremony, a journey with A&K to Laos is certain to be remembered for years to come.

When to Go

Laos is best visited between November and February when the weather is both warm and dry, and river travel along the Mekong is made easy and enjoyable thanks to high water levels. The heaviest rainfall generally occurs between August and September whilst the hottest temperatures are March to June when temperatures can climb to 35°C and above.
