The Thai mainland offers varied delights, from the remote island-like paradise of Krabi in the south to the former capital Chiang-Mai in the north.
The capital, and the starting point for many Thailand holidays, is Bangkok - a heady combination of congested noisy streets, vibrant canals, floating markets, temples and a river running through its centre. In the north, hill tribe communities still live in small wooden villages, following age old traditions. Ancient cities date back to earlier Siamese civilisations, national parks are rich with tropical flora and fauna and in small provincial towns you still find gentle Buddhist temples hazed with incense smoke and lit by candles.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
November to March. April is often the hottest month of the year, and also the month of the celebratory 'Songkran' festivals. May to October is the rainy season, with short bursts of rainstorms refreshing the green paddy fields once more.
