Day 2: Arequipa.

Ringed by snow-capped volcanoes, Arequipa is a remarkable colonial collection of sillar (native white volcanic stone) constructions which gives the city its name, Peru’s ‘White City’. A complement of colonial buildings, which includes casonas (manor houses), convents and churches, make it one of the most refined and historic cities in Peru. Stop by the Plaza de Armas, gaze at the women dressed in vibrant colours selling equally vibrant woven goods. Admire Monasterio de Santa Catalina and enjoy the rich atmosphere of this "city within a city". This peaceful haven, with russet and blue walled streets lined with bright geraniums, is still, 400 years after it was built, home to an order of nuns. Later, find a place for sundowners at Mirador de Yanahuara, the historic square with engraved arches which provides the perfect vantage point to gaze over the whole city.
