Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Jaen – Leymebamba.

Arrive into Jaen and journey deep into Peru’s northern cloud forest to the Chachapoyas region and the tranquil town of Leymebamba situated at a height of 2,200 metres. Take some time to relax in the beautiful surroundings of your eco-lodge, watch the hummingbirds play and wander along nature trails.

Day 2: Leymebamba.

Venture high into the hills of Peru’s northern cloud forest to the tombs of Revash. Navigate through a maze of orange roofs and whitewashed walls on the edge of a limestone cliff. Hear the stories behind the bizarre choice of architecture that forms these miniature cliff-top villages. Later, visit the Leymebamba Museum where the spectacle of some 220 mummies will astound. Delve into the mysteries of these relics recovered from cliff tombs at the nearby Lake of the Condors.

Day 3: Leymebamba - Chachapoyas.

Head high into the cloud forest to the fortified citadel of Kuelap. Crowning a 3,000m hilltop, Kuelap was once home to the ‘Warriors of the Cloud’ – the Inca name for the Chachapoyas people. Wind up the hill by foot or on horseback to the lost city. Wander through massive stone walls and jungle-clad ruins and let each discovery be a reminder of a formidable culture lost to history. Continue to Chachapoyas.

Day 4: Chachapoyas – Chiclayo.

You will have a long adventure today, leaving the world of the Chachapoyas behind as you head to Jaen and onwards along up the main the hot and dry Chamaya Valley where rice and cocoa are grown.  From the small village of Hualapampa the road climbs steeper to the continental divide (2,137metres) before heading down to the coastal plain. Seek out the many remains of adobe structures built by the Moche, Sican and Lambayeque before arriving in the bustling city of Chiclayo.

Day 5: Chiclayo.

Journey to Huaca Rajada complex, located in Sipan village, where the tomb of the Lord of Sipan was found. This tomb of one of the most powerful Moche rulers of the time is the best example of the splendour and power the Moche rulers enjoyed. Understand the fascinating Moche culture through the numerous pieces of gold jewellery and ceremonial utensils discovered at the site. Continue to Túcume, the last capital of the Lambayeque and Chimu Kingdom that prospered before the arrival of the Incas in northern Peru. Visit the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, one of the most impressive and modern archaeological museums in South America. Here you can observe all the richness and ostentation with which the Lord of Sipan was buried before returning to your hotel.

Day 6: Chiclayo - Trujillo.

Transfer to Trujillo via North Pan-American Highway, passing sugar and rice plantations. Stop in Magdalena de Cao to visit El Brujo, one of the oldest and most important archaeological complexes on the north coast of Peru, containing more than 4,500 years of history. In the Cao Museum, discover the Lady of Cao, the only female ruler of ancient Peru, her tattooed mummy still in perfect condition. After lunch, explore the city with its Cathedral, and the Main Square of Trujillo where you can find a monument in honour of Trujillo’s Independence, designed by Edmund Moeller between 1921 and 1929. Urquiaga House shelters several pre-Inca and colonial valuables as well as the greatest collection of currencies in Peru. Finally, stroll through Emancipation House, which in 1823 became headquarters of the First Constitutional Congress of the Republic and later headquarters of President Jose de La Riva Agüero’s Government.

Day 7: Trujillo.

Discover the majestic Sun and Moon Temples, two huge flat-topped pyramids, located near the stunning Cerro Blanco Hill. Built in the 5th century, this was the religious and governmental seat of the Moche Culture and excavations continue to reveal the magic concepts and rituals of its ancient dwellers. Continue to the Rainbow temple or Huaca Arco Iris, an archaeological site that belongs to Chimu culture, surrounded by a decorated wall dedicated to the rainbow as a fertility symbol. Continue to the beach resort of Huanchaco, a fishing village renowned for its superb seafood – and some say the place where Ceviche originated. Finally, unravel the mysteries of the pre-Inca city of Chan Chan, recently declared a UNESCO cultural legacy of humankind. Bid farewell to northern Peru as you transfer to Trujillo airport for your onward journey.
