Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Varanasi

Welcome to India's city of temples, Varanasi. Sitting on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi known also as Benares or Kashi is not only one of the oldest cities in the world, it is also one of India’s holiest landmarks. One of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism, its role in Buddhism is also significant. Upon arrival, receive and A&K welcome and transfer privately to your hotel – a former palace overlooking the sacred Ganges River and the stunning ghats, stone steps leading down to the river where religious rituals take place every day. Settle in and prepare to experience this gorgeously chaotic and charismatic city.

At dusk, head to the Dashashwamedh Ghat to witness the elaborate Aarti ceremony, one of the most sacred Hindu rituals. Watch as fire and flowers are offered to the goddess Ganga and soak up the unforgettable ambience as chanted prayers and rhythmic drumming fill the air.

Day 2: Varanasi

Rise early for a dawn boat ride along the Ganges. Drift slowly down the river, accompanied to the sounds of sitar and tabla and soak in a sense of serene spirituality as the sacred river comes to life Observe daily life unfold along the ghats, where locals and pilgrims cleanse themselves, literally and spiritually, in the river’s sacred waters. After your cruise, wander through the old town with its narrow lanes, bustling markets and vibrant temples. Then, step inside a traditional Akhara, a gymnasium where men of all ages practice a traditional form of wrestling known as kushti or pehlwani. After time to relax, journey to the Sarnath. Understand why this is one of Buddhism’s most important sites and see where Lord Buddha is said to have preached his first sermon. Then, discover Buddhist art treasures in the Archaeological Museum before watching the talented handloom weavers creating exquisite silk Banarasi saris at a local weavers’ colony enroute to Varanasi.

Day 3: Varanasi

With so much to take in, the morning is yours to discover your own way. Choose from a selection of optional experiences (additional charge). Or take a stroll along the teeming ghats and navigate a maze of lanes to witness life unfolding. Spend your afternoon at leisure.
