Relive the rich, and often turbulent, history of four central European countries on this fascinating cultural journey. Meet local characters who will shed light on events which played out in the region from the Holy Roman Empire through and medieval monarchies to Prussian rule and World War II, the Soviet era, pre-reunification Germany to today. Explore vibrant cities with rich artistic traditions and remarkable architectural achievements and see where some of the most important moments in history were played out. Many of the excursions are tailored exclusively for the group, with private access to incredible sites, specialist insights and experiences.

Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Warsaw, Poland.

Welcome to Poland and your hotel next to the Presidential Palace. A guest speaker delivers a fascinating account of the tragic events that befell Poland last century and the impact of EU and NATO membership. This evening, your Resident Tour Director will deliver a briefing on the journey ahead before a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Warsaw | A Turbulent History.

A short walk to the Old Town, which was entirely destroyed in WWII and later painstakingly restored. The beautiful Royal Castle is a highlight. Taste traditional home-style Polish cooking at lunch today and visit the monument that commemorates the 1944 Warsaw Uprising when thousands of heroes gave their lives for their homeland.

Day 3: Warsaw | Royal & Artistic Heritage.

Head out of the city to the Wilanów Palace, one of the most treasured Polish Baroque monuments. Time to wander through the glorious parkland and formal gardens which include a rose parterre before visiting the soaring Palace of Culture and Science, one of Stalin’s “Wedding Cakes”. Soak up the sweeping city views from the terrace on the 30th floor. After lunch visit the Fryderyk Chopin Museum and the Holy Cross Church. Your day concludes fittingly with a short recital of Chopin’s music.

Day 4: Berlin, Germany | Graffiti Art on the Berlin Wall.

A short flight this morning to Berlin. Lunch today is in the rooftop restaurant of the distinctive Reichstag building. This afternoon join a former resident of East Berlin at the open-air East Side Gallery to admire the murals on the remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall – a wonderful artistic expression of freedom. Last stop is the TV Tower which has a fantastic panoramic view over the city.

Day 5: Potsdam | Post-war Germany & Political Prisoners.

Travel a short distance to Potsdam where your first stop is the Cecilienhof Palace built between 1914 and 1917 in the style of an English Tudor manor house. This was the location of the Potsdam Conference of 1945 which sealed the fate of post-war Germany. Later, meander through the extraordinary park and gardens of Frederick the Great’s summer palace, Sanssouci. After lunch return to Berlin for a poignant encounter visiting the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial with a former political prisoner. Detention camp and Soviet prison until 1989, thousands of political prisoners were incarcerated here. A firsthand account of the harrowing conditions and interrogation methods used will be startling. Continue to the nearby Stasi Museum, located in the former headquarters of the secret police.

Day 6: Berlin | Germany’s Jewish Heritage.

This morning visit the remarkable Jewish Museum. Designed by Daniel Libeskind, it exhibits the social, political and cultural history of the Jews in Germany from the fourth century to the present.

Day 7: Dresden | Baroque Beauty.

Travel south to Dresden where you’ll admire one of Europe’s finest collections of royal treasure at the magnificent Green Vault in Dresden Palace. Continue to the Czech capital and your hotel in the city’s picturesque Malá Strana district.

Day 8: Prague | City of a Hundred Spires.

Cross the river this morning to explore the city’s Jewish Quarter, which remained a walled ghetto until 1848. See the birthplace of Franz Kafka and visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Pinkas Synagogue and the Old-New Synagogue. Later in the Old Town see the historic astronomical clock and the Municipal House, the city’s finest Art Nouveau building. After lunch visit the Estates Theatre where Mozart’s Don Giovanni had its premiere in 1787 before exploring Wenceslas Square, the focus for events during the Prague Spring of 1968 and the Velvet Revolution of 1989, which heralded the end of the old communist regime.

Day 9: Prague | Monuments & Memorials.

This morning sit yourself in an historic Czech car for the drive to the Strahov Monastery where privileged access is arranged to the sumptuously decorated monastic libraries. Afterwards visit the imposing Prague Castle which is the President’s official residence. Highlights include the Cathedral of St. Vitus and the Basilica of St. George which was founded in 905 AD. You will also see the Golden Lane, a row of tiny houses dating from the 16th century.

After lunch in the charming Lesser Town, visit the crypt within the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror. Conclude with refreshments at a café, once a popular meeting place for anti-communist dissidents.

Day 10: Budapest, Hungary | Sophistication on the Danube.

A morning flight to Budapest. Your hotel is located in the heart of the city close to the famous Chain Bridge. A short walking tour provides an orientation of the city and will include a visit to the vast St Stephen’s Basilica. Before dinner this evening, your language skills are put to the test with an introductory Hungarian lesson – sok szerencsét kivánok (good luck)!

Day 11: Budapest | City of Two Faces.

Bisected by the Danube, this extraordinary city is broken into two distinct sections. Begin your discovery in Pest, the city’s urban centre, with a visit to Parliament which stretches along the Danube embankment. Admire the imperial regalia which includes the Crown of St Stephen, a powerful symbol of Hungarian nationhood. Later on, visit the State Opera House and continue along Andrassy Avenue to Heroes’ Square, with its impressive Millennial Monument. After lunch, enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Danube.

Day 12: Budapest | Design Your Day.

Uncover more of the character of this multi-faceted metropolis on one of the following activities:

  • Take a food-inspired adventure through Budapest, exploring markets, providores and tasting local specialities.
  • Discover the city’s Art Nouveau architecture on a walking tour.

This afternoon, cross the river to Buda, the royal district, and the Matthias Church with stunning panoramas of the city and river. Later at the foot of Castle Hill, head underground for a private tour of the Hospital in the Rock, a former top-secret nuclear bunker and emergency hospital. Celebrate the journey’s end with a scenic sundowner on Gellért Hill and a special farewell dinner.
