Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Bogotá.

Welcome to Bogotá, located at 2,640 metres, on one of the Andes’ many high plateaux. On arrival at El Dorado International Airport meet your A&K representative who will transfer you to your accommodation. Stroll out on your own, seek out restaurants and cafes and perhaps even taste your first unforgettable Colombian coffee.

Day 2: Bogotá.

Head north to the legendary Guatavita Lake, a crater lake 3,100 metres above sea level that served as a sacred site for Indians who worshipped the goddess of water. Witness Colombia’s incredible biodiversity here in the high Andean woodlands. Then, explore the tranquil town of Guatavita with its striking white houses and enjoy a traditional local lunch. Back in Bogotá, your private walking tour will introduce you to the colonial charm of La Candelaria, the historic centre. Admire artworks in Museo Botero, an old colonial residence which houses the pre-eminent collection of Botero’s works and will leave you dazzled by his artworks and those of his private collection including Picassos, Renoirs and Monets. See the glittering collection in the Museo del Oro where some 32,000 pieces of incredible pre-Hispanic gold artifacts are on show.

Day 3: Bogotá - Pereira.

Begin early for your private journey to Bogotá airport and the flight to Pereira, the heart of Colombia’s coffee country. Continue your journey, accompanied with your guide, to the rolling green foothills and the Valle de Cocora, home to the world’s tallest palm tree, the Quindian wax palm. Learn why the indigenous tribes worshipped what is now Colombia’s national tree. Explore the cloud forest on foot and learn firsthand why Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world. Later, explore the vibrant traditional towns of Salento and Filandia, and dare to sample local spirits.

Day 4: Pereira.

From zingy zapotes to luscious lulos, Colombia’s exotic fruits are a guaranteed delight – sample a colourful cornucopia in the beautiful courtyard of your hotel. Move onto Pijao, a city where the living is slow and the locals are gracious. Be welcomed into the homes of several families; enjoy their beautiful gardens, try their local drinks, and get a unique taste of life in Latin America’s first “Slow City”.

Day 5: Pereira - Cartagena.

Fly to Cartagena, the jewel in Colombia’s crown. Proceed to your luxury small hotel at the heart of Cartagena’s handsome old town. There’s no better way to explore this picture-perfect colonial city than by following the footsteps of Gabriel Garcia Márquez. See the places that inspired his literary masterpieces, including Love In The Time Of Cholera. This evening, climb to the hilltop San Felipe Fortress, for sunset cocktails. Built to defend the city from pirate attacks, spend time walking around, learning how the castle was constructed.

Day 6: Cartagena.

Enjoy a short drive to La Boquilla, a beautiful untouched fishing village. Glide down the river in a canoe to explore the mangrove tunnels and the fascinating coastal ecosystem. Take time to meander through the village, soaking up its unique charm, before returning to Cartagena for lunch.

Day 7: Cartagena.

Head to the village of San Basilio de Palenque, a village established by escaped slaves in the 17th century and today a UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Join a local family for a walking tour of the community and learn how the Afro-Colombian inhabitants have preserved many of the customs of their African ancestors, even their own dialect. Return to Cartagena for lunch and a leisurely afternoon.

Day 8: Depart Cartagena.

Spend the morning taking a final stroll before your private transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
