Journey Highlights

Both spring and autumn in Japan are glorious times to visit. The landscape is awash with colour from the pink and red cherry blossoms of spring to the foliage of autumn. Journeys depart spring and autumn with visits to stunning gardens, ancient samurai villas, charming mountain villages and there are two days of celebration at the Takayama Festival. Our expert local host, Iku Ishii, will also introduce you to the country’s history and heritage from the modern era back through the feudal period of warlords and shogun to the early Nara village culture of the 8th century. You’ll experience some of the country’s most fascinating customs from a traditional tea ceremony to a kaiseki ryori dinner with a traditional maiko (apprentice geisha). You’ll walk the scenic Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto, visit the atelier of Tokyo’s most famous swordsmith family and see some of the country’s most important Shinto shrines.

Your Host

A resident of the lovely port city of Yokohama, Ikuko (Iku) Ishii has been a guide and
interpreter for more than five years. She has travelled around Japan extensively with small
groups and independent visitors and loves nothing more than meeting new people
and proudly showing off the wonders of her home country. Sharing the ancient traditions
and rituals of the Japanese as well as introducing visitors to its wonderful culinary

not travelling she plays the cello and tennis.
