Day 2: Ajloun & Jerash

Start your Jordan adventure at the Crusader castle of Ajloun. Strategically built in the hilly contours, on a clear day, you can admire views all the way to the Dead Sea. Head to Jerash, one of the best-preserved GrecoRoman cities in the world. Once a hub for spice traders, today you can walk around its striking colonnades, crumbling archways, and pavements permanently grooved by years of chariot traffic. You’ll have the afternoon to explore and linger as you please.

Day 3: Amman

Today, Design your Day – giving you the freedom to choose the experience that is best suited to you. Select from the following options:

Option 1: Get acquainted with Amman. Visit Amman’s ancient citadel to view the monumental Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace. Then head to the Royal Automobile Museum to see classic cars from American cruisers to regal Rolls-Royces.

Option 2: Visit the Iraq Al-Amir Women Cooperative Society. Take a look at the work of this local cooperative aimed at developing craftwork by women in the surrounding villages. Visit both the fabric and paper workshop showcasing artisanal designs. This afternoon, take the opportunity to duck into the Jordan Museum to see the Ain Ghazal statues, which date from 7250 BC.

Day 4: Amman – Petra

Take the scenic route to Petra, stopping at Mount Nebo, from where Moses glimpsed the Promised Land. From its summit you can gaze out over Jerusalem. Follow the crosscountry King’s Highway, forged by Old Testament kings (and everyone who came after). You’ll swoop through the Amman gorge to Madaba and see its Byzantine Mosaic Map, made from two million pieces of stone. Learn how to preserve ancient mosaics before heading to dramatic Shobak, a 12th-century Crusader castle, built to guard the King’s Highway. Continue to your hotel in Petra.

Day 5: Petra

Despite Indiana Jones’s best efforts, nothing can quite prepare you for Petra, Jordan’s rock star landmark. Sculpted into the mountain range, its huge carved temples and rose-hued sandstone beguile even the most discerning travellers. With over 2,000 years of history, you can view Nabataean masonry at its finest. There are over 1,000 tombs, so boot up to stroll around treasured sites such as the colonnaded Temple of Winged Lions, the Corinthian Tomb, the Palace Tomb, and the magnificent Treasury. You’ll also have the chance to investigate original baths, markets, and storerooms.

Day 6: Petra

Today, Design your Day – giving you the freedom to choose the experience that is best suited to you. Select from the following options:

Option 1: Explore Petra. Return to the Lost City and continue surveying its network of tombs. This time you might choose to walk the Siq, the near milelong passageway leading to the Treasury.

Option 2: Experience Little Petra. See Siq al-Barid, smaller but no less beautiful than Petra. It’s mercifully overlooked by tourists, so you can enjoy its cooling cave dwellings and hand-painted frescoes in peace.

Day 7: Petra – Dead Sea

Channel Lawrence of Arabia on a 4x4 journey across the Wadi Rum. You’ll get your kicks careering through rippled desert, speckled with Bedouin Camps during World War I. These still exist today and you can pause for lunch under canvas. Continue to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest land on Earth, and check into your shoreside resort. Spend the rest of the afternoon hypnotised by the pale blue waters, best enjoyed with an icy cocktail.

Day 8: Dead Sea

Set off for ‘Bethany Beyond the Jordan’, said to be the site where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist. Its religious importance has earned it UNESCO accreditation. After spending time here, return to your hotel then cool off in the Dead Sea, a swimming experience of a different sort. Despite its name, the Dead Sea has long attracted travellers who believe in its rejuvenating qualities. Join them to bob across the surface of its mineral-rich waters.
