Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi

Arrive into the Kenyan capital, your springboard to safari. You are met by A&K and transferred privately to your family-run boutique lodge, The Emakoko, artfully built into the side of a valley on the Mbagathi River, which borders the Nairobi National Park. Settle in and enjoy the facilities before celebrating your first night in Africa with dinner overlooking the national park. Later retire to bed and fall asleep to the sounds of Africa.

Day 2: Nairobi

A day to discover what makes Nairobi tick with your private A&K guide. Start off at the Giraffe Centre, situated in a fifteen-acre park owned by Giraffe Manor. The lovely, spacious manor house was originally built by coffee king, David Duncan, in 1932 and was bought in the 1970s by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville. In an effort to protect the Rothschild Giraffe, Jock and Betty kept several of the endangered giraffes on their land. One of the giraffes, Daisy, was made famous by Betty Leslie-Melville's book Raising Daisy Rothschild and some of her offspring still wander freely within the grounds. The centre is used as an educational facility for local school children and displays their artistry as well as historical articles and photographs.

Next stop is the extraordinary Ocean Sole workshop, a social enterprise that creates employment by repurposing thongs, discarded in the ocean, into incredible and unique artistic creations. Meet some of the people and artisans within this organisation working together for a cleaner and (more colourful) planet.

After lunch, visit the inspiring Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, on the edge of the Nairobi National Park, for a private afternoon viewing of the orphaned elephants. The late Daphne and David Sheldrick (the first game warden of Tsavo National Park), were early pioneers of Kenya's conservation efforts. Dame Daphne later established a project which rescues orphaned baby elephants, rhinos and other wild species across Kenya, and rehabilitates them for an eventual return to the wild. You’ll be uplifted by the incredible work being done here to save these magnificent animals and the loving care given by their keepers.

Return to The Emakoko, keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife as you drive through Nairobi National Park en route.

Day 3: Nairobi – Ol Pejeta Conservancy

This morning you are driven north to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy where your private A&K tented camp awaits. Relive the great ‘Out of Africa’ safari traditions in time-honoured fashion in your own exclusive camp which is mobile and self-sufficient and allows total privacy on a private concession in one of Africa's most game rich areas. Meals, and drinks, are all included and can be tailored to your tastes and timed to your mood while your private safari guide will introduce you to the myriad wildlife wonders of Ol Pejeta in your own private safari vehicle.

After lunch this afternoon set out on a safari drive in search of wildlife.

Days 4-5: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The next two days are spent here at Ol Pejeta, a private wildlife conservancy located on a 90,000-acre ranch in Central Kenya. The conservancy has a strong commitment to endangered species and boasts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It is also home to Africa’s iconic species, plus the endangered white rhino, the Jackson hartebeest, and the spotted hyena amongst many others.

Tailor you own way with an exciting range of activities for the whole family. In addition to traditional safari outings, there are spotlit night drives to reveal many fascinating nocturnal species, guided bush walks giving you a different perspective on your surrounds, a lion tracking expedition to monitor the reserve’s collared lions, an encounter with the canine unit which supports the armed rangers, a bird walk or a community visit to experience the local culture.

Settle into your exclusive vintage style retreat which is yours alone to enjoy before embarking on a thrilling afternoon game drive in the world famous Masai Mara. The reserve's wide-open spaces and abundant wildlife make for exciting and effortless game viewing. Prepare to be amazed.

Days 7-9: Masai Mara Game Reserve

Spend the next three days at Cottar's with privately guided morning and afternoon game viewing activities. Your villa is located in its own 7,600 acre private conservancy, one kilometre from the Masai Mara Game Reserve. You will venture into the Masai Mara, a photographer's dream, with lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and the graceful Maasai giraffe all resident. The Mara's vast rolling hills make spotting game a relatively easy prospect as you gaze over the sprawling wildlife-rich plains, taking in tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and antelope, as well as smaller groups of Africa’s iconic species.

As Cottar's is located on a private concession, in addition to private game drives by 4WD vehicle, you can also enjoy night drives, bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and guided bush walks. There is also an opportunity to visit a Maasai village and school (additional cost).
