Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Yangon.

A warm A&K welcome to Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital and largest city. Settle into your historic hotel and spend the day exploring this bewitchingly old-new city with colonial architecture and fascinating markets.

Day 2: Yangon.

Discover the four unique wonders of the city once known as the “Queen of the East”. Join your guide to the Botataung Pagoda and venture into the intriguing hollow stupa. Take a look into the future as you experience a traditional fortune reading by one of Yangon’s most experienced astrologers. Head downtown to discover the city’s colonial architecture and bustling Bogyoke Aung San Market. Later, marvel at the Reclining Buddha Pagoda and step inside the Buddha Shrine Hall filled with effigies. Your final stop is the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda, a diamond-encrusted masterpiece with a gold stupa towering 98 metres above the city.

Day 3: Yangon – Bagan.

Transfer to Yangon airport for your flight to Bagan. Board the Sanctuary Ananda, your platform for discovery for the next four nights. If there’s time before the cruise sets sail, discover the highlights of Bagan.

 After lunch on board, we will visit Kayminga pagoda complex to see the different architecture of the stupas first-hand. After, visit the Ananda Temple, regarded by folklore as one of the most beautiful temples in Myanmar.

Enjoy the sunset over the Bagan plains and admire the light change on the pagodas as they exude antiquity and mystery. Finally the sun sets behind the hills on the far side of the Irrawaddy River, filling the sky with a reddish glow, a truly magic moment.

A welcome briefing and champagne reception will be hosted in the Kansi Panorama Lounge before a candlelit sandbank dinner is served with the backdrop of the twinkling lights of Bagan.

Day 4: Cruising the Irrawaddy River.

Choose between an early morning balloon tour (an additional charge applies, please book in advance) or visit the bustling local market of Nyaung U. The daily market is where the farmers meet to buy and sell a variety of goods, ranging from fruit and vegetables to china and lacquerware. Next, on to the great golden Shwezigon Pagoda which is said to contain important relics of the Gautama Buddha, two bones and a copy of a tooth. 

We will then return to the ship and start sailing upstream towards Sagaing during which a variety of on board activities will be offered including a longyi (sarong) and thanaka (cosmetic) demonstration, and a talk on Myanmar. A delicious dinner in the Talifoo Restaurant will then follow.

Day 5: Mandalay.

Enjoy a back of house tour and cooking class with our Executive Chef as we cruise the Irrawaddy.

In the afternoon visit the pagoda sprinkled Sagaing Hill, an important religious and monastic centre, home to some 554 monasteries and 6,000 monks and nuns. Here we will visit a Monastic school where you will have the opportunity to meet some of the residents and understand the teachings of Buddhism. Afterwards, take in the views from the top of the hill on the terraces of the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda which are truly breathtaking. Amarapura, was once known as 'The City of Immortals'. Today, the leisurely 'clack-clack' from the looms of the cotton and silk weavers has replaced the noisy bustle of this former capital. Visit the U Bein Bridge, a spectacular place to enjoy the sunset. This long teak bridge snakes across the Taungthaman Lake. After sunset, return to the Sanctuary Ananda.

Day 6: Mandalay.

Leave your cruise ship behind and visit one of the country’s most revered Buddhist places of worship, Mahamuni Pagoda. Continue to the beautiful teak Shwenandaw Monastery, the only palace building to survive World War II bombings, and Kuthodaw Pagoda, where 729 marble slabs inscribed with Tripitaka texts have earned it the title “the biggest book in the world”.

Day 7: Mandalay – Inle Lake.

Fly to Heho and check into your elegant, boutique hotel on the edge of Inle Lake, a culturally vibrant, untouched corner of the world. See where fisherman row using their legs, farmers work on floating land, and stilt villages punctuate the landscape. Visit the Phaung-Daw-U Pagoda and see the five golden Buddha images carried from Malaysia to Myanmar by the 12th century King Alaungsithu. Then, visit the wooden Nga Pe Chaung Monastery built on stilts over the lake.

Day 8: Inle Lake.

Start your day with a visit to the Fifth Day Market, the lively rotating market that travels by boat around the towns. Browse handmade crafts and fresh produce grown on the floating gardens, while admiring the vibrant dress of different hill tribes. See firsthand why Inle Lake is renowned for its silk weaving in the village of Inn Paw Khone. This afternoon, cruise through a densely-forested river to visit Indein perched on a hillside in the southwestern corner of the lake. Slow down to wander through this typical lakeside village and watch daily life unfold before walking through a bamboo grove and up a beautiful stairway lined with wooden columns to old Shwe Inn Dein, an impressive collection of ancient Shan style stupas. Bask in the stunning view across the lake and beyond, to the hills in the east and the rolling countryside to the west.

Day 9: Inle Lake

Enjoy your day at leisure. You can choose to venture north to the Aythaya Vineyard, Myanmar’s first and most notable vineyard. Sample some of the vineyard’s finest wines surrounded by the beautiful estate with countless rows of grapes nestled high on the mountainside (optional, additional fee). Return to your resort before an indulgent dinner.

Day 10: Inle Lake – Yangon.

Transfer to Heho for your flight to Yangon. Enjoy lunch before a day at leisure with your private guide and driver. Take the opportunity to finish exploring this incredible city. Wander amongst the colonial-style buildings, pagodas and parks of Pansodan Street. Visit the Sule Pagoda or National Museum, where the Lion’s Throne will take your breath away.

Day 11: Depart Yangon.
