Day 2: Lima

Enjoy your first taste of Peru’s capital with a visit to the Plaza Mayor, which is the birthplace of the city of Lima, and contains the beautiful cathedral and government palaces. Then head to Larco Museum. Its flower-filled gardens alone are worth a visit, not to mention its thousands of pre-Columbian artefacts, pottery, and Incan relics. Over the years, Lima has become a serious dining destination for foodies from all over the world. Day 3: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

Today, fly to Cusco where you are met and transferred to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Colonial architecture, including the 16thcentury cathedral, and Incan remains are dotted across this historic city. En route to your hotel you have a chance to meet the locals in the form of llamas and alpacas at Awana Kancha, and to learn about their valuable fleeces. Lunch is served at Hacienda Sarapampa. Here, you can see how the Incas developed a unique corn variety which helped to boost their economy.

Day 4: Sacred Valley

After a hearty breakfast, begin exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas with a visit to a remote village, frozen in time. Here there is the opportunity to mingle with the Andean community and learn about the agricultural methods they have used for centuries to support themselves in this challenging mountain environment. Before lunch, visit the archaeological site of Moray. With concentric terraces carved into a huge earthen bowl, the deep amphitheatre-like terracing creates a fascinating landscape. It also offers magnificent views right across the Sacred Valley.

Day 5: Sacred - Valley - Machu Picchu

Today, travel by train to Machu Picchu. En route to the station, visit Ollantaytambo to look around its imposing fortress. Arrive at Aguas Calientes, from where a bus takes you to the last citadel built by a pre-Columbian civilisation. Overlooking the Urubamba River and discovered in a tangle of trees atop a mountain, nothing can prepare you for the sight of Machu Picchu’s wide avenues, cascading terraces, and intricate stonework. All this cradled by steamy forest and skypiercing mountains. After a guided tour, head to your hotel for dinner.

Day 7: Cusco

It’s time to explore history-rich Cusco. Once the Incan capital, before the Spanish crushed their civilisation, today you can witness both colonial architecture and Incan remains on just about every corner. Sights include the 16th-century cathedral on the bustling Plaza de Armas, and Coricancha, a former Inca palace turned Spanish church. Head to Sacsayhuamán on the outskirts, where Incas shaped giant polished boulders into a Cyclopean fortress.

This afternoon, Design your Day – giving you the freedom to choose the experience that is best suited to you. Select from the following options:

  • Enjoy a guided tour around the Inca Museum and San Pedro market.
  • Visit the San Blas artisans’ neighbourhood and church.
  • Capture the images of Cusco’s hidden streets on a photographic tour.

After an educational day, enjoy dinner at the elegant MAP Café.
