Pedal through the spectacular Nelson Tasman region of New Zealand’s South Island on this bespoke cycling tour. Spend a leisurely few hours in the saddle each day soaking up the stunning natural landscapes, ranging from endless golden beaches to virgin forest and rugged mountains. Stop in at studios and galleries along the route to meet local artists and artisans in a region which has long been a magnet for creatives. Sample wines from leading wineries, enjoy a brew in New Zealand’s oldest pub and sail through the Abel Tasman National Park on an overnight luxury catamaran cruise. This journey allows an abundance of outdoor activity by day and luxury boutique accommodation by night, the perfect balance.

Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Nelson

Arrive into Nelson, where you are met and transferred to your accommodation at Accent House. After a light lunch, transfer to the start of the cycle route and enjoy an easy introductory bike ride along The Great Taste Trail and its picturesque backroads (25 kms). Finish the afternoon with a craft beer or local wine at the vibrant wharf area in the quaint coastal village of Mapua with just a five minute ride back to the hotel. Time to relax before a gourmet welcome dinner in Nelson at Hopgood’s, one of New Zealand’s top restaurants.

Day 2: Upper Moutere

Cycle along the quiet country byways of Upper Moutere, an enchanting rural community boasting vineyards, orchards, hop gardens and the oldest pub in New Zealand where you’ll stop for lunch. During the afternoon ride, visit boutique wineries and taste the local drop at a private tasting. Meet artisans and artists, sculptors and potters, as well as providores and growers who live and work in the area producing wine, black garlic and more (30-50 kms).

Day 3: Motueka River

Find yourself deep in the heart of the beautiful Motueka Valley cycling along the majestic Motueka River with its clear, deep pools and lively rapids (approx. 20 kms). Finish the bike ride with morning tea before undertaking a guided hike in Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand’s second largest, home to some of the oldest rocks, strangest plants and rarest birds in the country. Amble along a network of walking tracks exploring high plateaux and coastal palm forests to the summit of Mount Arthur, a ‘marble mountain’ with an extensive cave system. Breathe in the spectacular views of this rare wilderness from the peak (walk approx. 3 hours).

Day 4: Abel Tasman National Park

This morning you are transferred to the sandy beach at Kaiteriteri to board your private catamaran, Te Harinui, for a sailing adventure into the Abel Tasman National Park. Spend the day cruising through this coastal paradise, discovering hidden bays and beaches. There will be opportunities to walk along coastal tracks through the native bush soaking up the wonderful views; sightings of fur seals, little penguins, sea birds and other marine life and exploring the outlying islands. The vessel has stand up paddle boards, inflatable kayaks, snorkelling and fishing gear for guest use. This evening, your skipper drops anchor in the lee of Adele Island. Time for a swim or a shore visit while a barbeque dinner of fresh local ingredients is prepared. Enjoy a relaxing dinner on board before retiring to your cabin for the night.

Day 5: Nelson

Wake to the dawn chorus of native birdsong on predator-free Adele Island and enjoy breakfast on board as the vessel returns to Kaiteriteri. Disembark for your transfer back to Nelson. Browse the Nelson open air market before exploring the city centre. New Zealand’s sunniest city, Nelson has a rich creative vibe with galleries and workshops to explore, a lively café culture and botanical gardens. Enjoy lunch at the Suter Gallery Café before making your way back to the Accent House, with an opportunity to stop at Nelson's Classic Car Museum and visit the Höglund glass-blowing studio full of handblown perfume bottles, vases, goblets, paperweights, platters and bowls in beautiful colours created by Ola and Ossian Höglund. Celebrate the end of your journey tonight with a gourmet dinner at the award-winning Forsters restaurant at Moutere Hills Winery. Your menu is prepared by award winning chef Alistair Forster. Alistair is a New Zealand Lamb & Beef Ambassador and together with his wife Fiona they have created a stunning restaurant overlooking the vines. Complement your meal with a choice of boutique wines from the vineyard, or local beer.

Day 6: Depart Nelson

This morning is a 25-kilometre ride along a section of the Waimea Plain’s Great Taste Trail.  Cycle through historic villages, past orchards and vineyards and through more breathtaking coastal landscapes before morning tea at a local café. Your journey concludes at Nelson airport.

Journey Inclusions

All accommodation as detailed on a double/ twin share basis with private facilities; meals as specified; a souvenir reusable metal water bottle and a small hold all bag to be used for the overnight trip in the Abel Tasman Park; airport welcome; assistance with luggage and group transportation by private airconditioned vehicle; quality trial bikes with day bag and helmet (guests may choose to bring their own helmet). We can also fit the guest’s pedals to the bikes if they choose to bring their own; services of an A&K tour escort; all entrance fees, planning, handling, operational and communication charge.
