On this new wildlife-focused adventure, spend a week exploring northern Tanzania’s most famous wilderness areas where a huge ancient caldera is home to the highest density of big game in Africa and where more than 14,000 square kilometres of savannah hosts vast migrating herds on a continuous search for new pastures. Then, contrast the golden plains of Tanzania with dense jungle terrain in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans when you spend two life-changing days tracking the endangered mountain gorilla.

Journey Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive into northern Tanzania and transfer to your elegant boutique hotel set in tropical gardens on a coffee farm just outside Arusha.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater

Fly west to Lake Manyara where you will meet your guide for lunch at Gibb’s Farm, a working coffee plantation in the highlands. Time to stretch your legs before the drive to your spectacular lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into this vast extinct volcano whose towering walls are a natural enclosure for a dazzling abundance of wildlife. See wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and gazelle on the plains, waterbuck, bushbuck and eland in the forest, a healthy elephant population, black rhino, lion, leopard, hippo and flamingo. On return to your lodge, stop at a traditional Maasai village.

Day 4: Grumeti Reserve.

Return to Lake Manyara for the short flight west to the private 350,000-acre Singita Grumeti Reserve, adjacent to the Serengeti National Park. Your exceptional lodge is situated on a hill above a beautiful waterhole and the Grumeti River.

Days 5-6: Grumeti Reserve.

Spend three days exploring the never-ending savannah, where more animals roam than in any other place on earth. Professional guides provide the perfect opportunity to get up close to Africa’s incredible animals, while evening drives reveal the elusive magic of nocturnal Africa. Wildife you are likely to spot includes cheetah, bearded wildebeest, Bat Eared fox, Maasai giraffe, lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and the rare Colobus monkey.

Day 7: Kigali, Rwanda

Transfer to the airstrip for the afternoon flight to the Rwandan capital, where you are met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 8: Parc National des Volcans.

On a guided introduction to Kigali, see the craft centre, the Kandt House Museum of Natural History and the memorial for victims of the genocide of 1994, a moving experience. Make a short stop for refreshments and a briefing before travelling northwest to the Parc National des Volcans and your exquisite lodge on the edge of the park.

Days 9-10: Parc National des Volcans.

Protecting the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanoes, a range of six extinct and three live volcanoes which shelter some of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world, this park gained world notoriety for the work Dian Fossey conducted here. Each day you are driven to park headquarters where you are allocated a gorilla tracking group. After a briefing by your tracker/guide, the adventure
begins. It may take anything from one to five hours of hiking to reach the gorillas depending on the location of the family. You’ll trek through farmland, thick vegetation and rainforest and upon sighting the gorillas, you spend a magical hour observing them as they go about their daily habits, feeding, foraging, playing, resting and tending their young. During your stay take a scenic drive to view the twin lakes, Ruhondo and Burera, with the spectacular backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 11: Kigali.

Return to Kigali with dinner at a local restaurant.
