A&K in the Know: Japan Cherry Blossom Season

December 2016

Spring in Japan is one of the best times to visit. The landscape is awash with colour as the pink and red cherry blossoms put on a show.  It’s a time to fully appreciate Japan’s breathtaking surroundings whilst visiting stunning gardens, ancient samurai villas and charming mountain villages. It’s also a time of festivals and spending two days at the country’s most famous Takayama Festival is not to be missed. Marvel at the elaborately decorated floats which are lit by lanterns for the night procession and the traditional dress of each district represented.

When is the best time to travel?
April is the best time to see cherry blossoms and is also the time across the whole country when the Japanese flock to parks and temple gardens to see the trees in flower. This is such a busy time and bookings should be made well in advance.

Experience a traditional Japanese Drum performance, visit the atelier of Tokyo’s most famous swordsmith family, understand the revered customs of the traditional Tea Ceremony in private temple surrounds and celebrate Takayama’s famous festival.

Things to see:

• Walk the scenic Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto
• Explore the city of Tokyo
• Visit Kanazawa- Japan’s emerging arts and culture capital
• See some of the country’s most important shrines, temples and gardens. Including Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous shrine, World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple and Kenroku-en gardens, ranked in the top three in Japan.
