Fancy yourself on a desert island swinging in a hammock under a palm tree, or gazing at weird and wonderful creatures in a faraway archipelago, or even admiring historic relics in an iconic Mediterranean setting. These are six of our favourite island destinations to visit over the coming months.

The Galapagos Islands| May

Few places on earth deliver such extraordinary wildlife sightings as the Galapagos Archipelago and it’s little wonder Charles Darwin was so enthralled by the islands and their inhabitants as to proffer his earth-shattering evolutionary theory. Lying 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, there are 21 islands in all, each with its own unique flora and fauna. A week-long yacht cruise is the best way to experience the area and all it has to offer.
Our suggested journey: Sail the Enchanted Isles from $13,850

Seychelles | June

Nestling off the coast of East Africa, the Seychelles is a glistening archipelago of over 100 islands famous for its pristine beaches, iridescent coral reefs, diving, snorkelling and rare wildlife such as the giant tortoise. Our go-to luxury hideaway for the ultimate in barefoot chic is North Island, favoured by royals, A-listers and honeymooners alike. Super luxe and very private, there are just 11 villas on the island built sustainably from reclaimed timbers and with every detail taken care of.
Our suggested journey: North Island getaway from $22,400

Lizard Island | July

Stylish and remote, Lizard Island is Australia’s northernmost island resort, favoured by well-heeled desert island enthusiasts… and keen anglers. Blessed with 24 sun-kissed beaches and azure waters, the island also has several world class dive sites, including the famous Cod Hole populated by some giant and curious Potato Cod, and over 1,000 acres of national park to explore with the resident naturalists if you can bear to leave the comfort of your villa.
Our suggested journey: Lizard Island getaway from $3,798

Madagascar | August

Eighty-eight million years of isolation has given Madagascar its unique and rare biodiversity. Home to some of the world’s most interesting species, about 90 percent of its wildlife is found nowhere else on the planet. Most famous are its lemurs, of which there are more than 100 species, but there are also incredible birds and chameleons of all shapes and sizes. The wildlife found in Madagascar’s rainforests, clear blue seas and spiny forest habitat are something to behold and you can experience it all in the company of renowned naturalist Dr Charlie Gardner.
Our suggested journey: A Naturalist’s Guide to Madagascar from $9,890

Maldives| September

Picture postcard vistas, impossibly clear blue water, white sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and abundant marine life, the Maldives delivers all that and more. Comprising over 1,000 islands, there are countless luxe lodgings to consider but one of A&K’s favourites is Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa in the far south. All experiences there are bespoke, tailored to the guest with romantic dinners and couples spa treatments a feature for honeymooners, and a host of water activities for families on holiday. We love the water villas positioned over the lagoon with overwater hammocks for lounging around in between dips in the crystal clear waters beneath.
Our suggested journey: Shangri-La Villingili Resort & Spa getaway from US$3,370

Sicily | October

The beautiful island of Sicily is a jewel in the Mediterranean with a rich mix of glorious scenery, fascinating history and some of Italy’s finest cuisine. Thanks to its location at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, it boasts a wealth of archaeological relics from ancient Greece and Rome to the Norman era. Fertile groves of olive trees, citrus orchards and vineyards fill the interior, while cliffside villages and glorious beaches make up the stunning coastal scenery. Its grand, historic hotels offer old world elegance and its climate is near perfect.
Our suggested journey: Splendours of Sicily from $9,260
