Epic fireworks, all night dance parties, glamorous black tie affairs or a quiet night under star-filled skies. New Year’s Eve can take many forms. Luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent wants to make sure guests see New Year’s Eve in with a bang. Now is the time to plan your New Years getaway, here are some ideas to whet the appetite.

Cape Town
Prepare to party in vibrant Cape Town where New Year’s celebrations span three days and the waterfront
is alive with music performances, street artists and a midnight fireworks display. If you prefer a quieter
vantage point, enjoy a personalised picnic at the top of Table Mountain with unobstructed views of the
dazzling pyrotechnics. Sleep off the celebration at one of the city’s beautiful beaches or head out to the
Winelands for a long lunch.

For travellers really wanting to get away from it all, there are few places more remote than Antarctica.
There is no more extraordinary way to bring in the New Year than being surrounded by icebergs and the
wilderness of Antarctica. Feast your eyes on a colony of penguins and a pod of whales. It’s an ideal family
adventure with specially tailored activities and workshops to keep young travellers amused; search for
ocean creatures in tidal pools, visit special bridges with the Captain, learn to draw penguins and tie
nautical knots. There is also an opportunity to engage in snowball fights on land. Parents and grandparents
will be equally enthralled by the fascinating lecture series held by the resident Expedition Team and photo
enrichment coach.

Head to the heart of the ancient Incan capital and gather with locals in the Plaza de Armas where revellers
seek good luck by circling the square seven times before an all-night party kicks off. Alternatively, enjoy a
more intimate celebration over dinner at the luxurious Belmond Hotel Monasterio, listen to Latin jazz music
and sip cocktails before watching the magnificent fireworks. For those wanting to continue the experience,
head to the nearby Incan ruins of Sacsayhuaman to watch the sun rise to bring in the New Year.

After a celebratory banquet at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace, wander across the road to where it’s all
happening at the Gateway of India. Enjoy dazzling fireworks, energetic dancing and live music. If that’s not
enough, join the rest of South Bombay at Marine Drive and party till dawn.

Spend New Years Eve in one of Europe’s trendiest capitals, with only four hours of daylight in late
December, the fireworks truly light up the sky. There are many community bonfires that take place across
the city, a great chance to mingle with the locals and enjoy the fresh air. Visiting in the winter, you’ll want
to recover with a stint in the countryside nearby, soak in the hot springs and get a glimpse of the
extraordinary Northern Lights.

Immerse yourself in tradition and spend New Year’s Eve at Madrid’s main plaza, Puerta del Sol. Listen to
the traditional chimes of the old post office’s clock for the midnight countdown and embrace the local
custom of eating 12 grapes for good luck. Continue the fiesta and pop the cork on a bottle of cava before
dancing the night away. Nourish weary bones with a mug of hot chocolate and churros!

Rio is a city that is famous for its tropical landscapes, samba dancing, glitz and glamour. It is also famous
for it’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Discerning travellers should head to the best show in town at the
Belmond Copacabana Palace. With its spectacular oceans views and prime seafront location exclusive views
of the fireworks are guaranteed. Dinner is designed by the hotel’s Executive Chef, drinks are included and
a live band gets the party started. Samba the night away in true Carioca fashion.
