Delve into a world of laid-back luxury at boutique resort, Milaidhoo. This tiny tropical island, measures just 300m by 180m and is fringed by soft deep white sand beaches. All very Maldivian. What’s worth noting is the location - in Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 126km north west of Male. In this marine reserve, you’ll find the world’s highest concentration of manta rays. And divers won’t even need to venture beyond the reef to be wowed. It’s noted as an outstanding snorkelling and diving site in its own right.

Designed with couples and honeymooners in mind, Milaidhoo is a grown-up, chilled out space. Only children over nine are welcomed. All villas (over-water and on the beach) have a freshwater pool on their sundecks, an undhoali (hanging swing chair) and rain showers.

Dine in Ba’theli – a docked, locally made cargo boat in the lagoon. Here you'll dine on gourmet dishes inspired by the spices that this type of cargo ship would have transported on its spice route. There is also Shoreline Grill or Ocean restaurants. Sundowners can be enjoyed at Compass restaurant.

When not indulging in the island’s culinary delights, guests can watch dolphins play on the surface of the turquoise ocean. Visit Hanifaru Bay where, if it’s the right season, manta rays and whale sharks bask in the shallow warm waters surrounding the island. Or take a dhow (a traditional Maldivian sailing boat) and head off into the far horizon. Laze by the infinity pool. Enjoy a treatment in the spa. Or do nothing but chill out on the beach and leave the busy work to the hermit crabs and herons. Dive deep into the ocean and discover the beauty below the surface or help the resort’s resident marine biologist identify endangered wildlife.

Why we like it

  • Milaidhoo has some of the most spacious villas in the Maldives and the most light and airy - you can open up all of the windows and embrace indoor/outdoor living and they all have a full-sized pool
  • Ba'theli Lounge is the world's only restaurant on a docked spice-route cargo ship and offers creative and very tasty south Asian dishes
  • A fantastic resort for couples and honeymooners, with lots of spaces romantic private dinners
  • One of the best house reefs, located in the heart of UNESCO biosphere reserve
  • Our top tip: the jewel of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is undoubtedly Hanifaru Bay, where, if the season's right, you are sure to spot manta rays. This is also the place for whale shark spotting. Snorkelling with these peaceful ocean giants is an unmissable experience.
