With a welcoming people, awe-inspiring architecture and idyllic countryside to explore, South Korea is a destination with so much to discover.
Visit the hip and edgy capital, Seoul, and you’ll find yourself marvelling at meticulously reconstructed palaces, secret gardens, teeming night markets with tantalising street food, contemporary art in avant-garde galleries and dramatically modern architecture.
Explore a living vestige of the Cold War and learn about a sombre chapter in the country’s history when you visit the DMZ, one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world separating South Korea from its northern neighbour. Venture to semi-tropical Jeju Island and hike up an extinct volcano, explore lava tubes or bask on its white sandy beaches. Gaze up at the distant stars from serene villages surrounded by rice fields. And plan a stay around the numerous quirky festivals celebrated throughout the year.
Listen to monks chanting serenely in Buddhist temples, marvel at the famed women divers of Jeju who gather octopus, abalone, clams, squid and seaweed. Join locals in tea houses and watch masters of Taekwondo practicing their national sport. Savour street food as you’ve never seen it before, sip craft beer, taste local delicacies in traditional hanoks and enjoy the freshest seafood in port towns and island locations. South Korea is an Asian wonder and you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

The ideal time to visit South Korea is Autumn (September–November), when temperatures are mild, rainfall is generally low and festivals aplenty. Korea’s mountains erupt in a magnificent array of reds, yellows and oranges, and locals flock to national parks to picnic under their fiery canopies. A visit in Spring is also worthwhile, as flowers bloom and a frothy cloak of cherry blossom covers the landscapes in pinkish white from south to north. It presents perfect weather to explore the destination’s national parks and take part in a variety of events and markets.
