A year-round destination, New Zealand’s climate is mild and varies across the islands. It can change unexpectedly from glorious sunshine to heavy rainfall, so be prepared for any season. New Zealand’s balmy summer days run from December to February with temperatures ranging from 21 to 25˚C with long days and hours of sunshine.
In the Autumn months, leaves are turning and temperatures are typically between 18 and 25˚C. The summer crowds have dissipated making it a great time for outdoor adventure. In the winter, mountains are thickly blanketed with snow, making the country a mecca for skiers, and the days are crisp and cool with temperatures between 10 and 16˚C but much cooler in the inland alpine areas. The North Island can feel cold but frost and snowfall are more common in the south.
Springtime temperatures between September and November range from 16 to 19˚C depending on which island you’re exploring. Spot baby animals and wildflowers as you traverse the scenery on the way to iconic gems like Milford Sound. It’s waterfall season in spring when cascades are at their most dramatic with the snow melt.
