Montenegro Extension

Leave Dubrovnik and travel southeast along the Konavle Valley, crossing the border into Montenegro and onwards to Kotor. The route takes you to Boka Kotorska, the most southerly fjord in Europe and one of the most beautiful bays in the area, where precipitous mountains rear up from azure waters. Continue past Risan and Perast and visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, a Baroque edifice that was first constructed in 1452 on a man-made islet. According to legend, the islet was created over the centuries by seamen who, after returning from each successful voyage, laid a rock in the bay. As time passed, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The church contains 68 magnificent paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a 17^th century artist from Perast. His most important painting, around nine-metres long, is "The Death of the Virgin". 

This afternoon, visit the city of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within its walls discover many bustling squares where locals congregate to sit and chat and enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee watching the world go by. Stroll through town and recharge at any one of the many cafés before arriving at the tiny islet of Sveti Stefan, which is joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, and your stylish hotel.

Marvel at the magnificent island of St Nicola and the beautiful secluded caves as you head towards Budva, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic Coast. Step back in time navigating the quaint streets of the old town of Budva which is over two millennia old and dates back to the 5^th Century BC. It sits on a small headland and is a maze of charming alleyways and squares, home to unique shops and restaurants.  The most important buildings are the church of St Sava and the town’s fortress of Citadella.

More spectacular scenery to soak up today on the drive to Virpazar and the beautiful Scutari Lake (Lake Skudar), Montenegro’s hidden gem, where water lilies flower and fortresses, monasteries and churches line the banks. Scutari Lake is home to 280 species of birds, some of which are endangered such as the Black Ibis and the Dalmatian pelican.

Take to the waters on a relaxing cruise soaking up the breathtaking mountain scenery, the birdlife, picturesque monasteries, churches and old villages. Enjoy a light picnic of local wine, smoked ham and the traditional pastry “priganice”, served with honey and cheese. Cool off with a dip in the lake and then travel on by road to a local family run winery where you meet the owners and taste the local red.
